Cape Town Crime Drama Launches on Universal Channel This Month

Calling all crime drama fans… Cape Town is a new locally filmed series starting in September that will be showing on Universal Channel. From The Dark Tower to zombie movies, there is no doubt that the Mother City is a favourite for film making in South Africa. And that makes perfect sense… between the incredible locations, huge talent pool and general affordability of filming here, the city is ideal for a wide variety of movies and  television series.

Cape Town Crime Series Starts This September

The Cape Town crime drama series is a multi part mini-series based on Deon Meyer’s book Dead Before Dying. The series will focus on the book’s main character, troubled detective Mat Joubert, as he takes on a new case while battling his personal demons. The cast includes a number of international actors as well as a strong supporting cast of local actors.

Cape Town Crime Series Begins in September

Here’s what we know so far about this new Cape Town TV series that will begin on Universal Channel (DStv 117) on Wednesday 7 September at 20h50…

* Mat Joubert will be played by Norwegian actor Trond Espen Seim. This character has a number of troubles, least of all the crime rate in South Africa’s Mother City. After his wife (a fellow police officer) is murdered, Mat turns to the bottle, but with the help of his partner, Sanct Snook, begins to try and turn his life around.

* Sanct Snook will be played by Boris Kodjoe. An established actor who has appeared in various movies, including Resident Evil, we are very sure that female viewers will enjoy seeing Boris in a role as a local cop, and should be able to forgive his rather amusing accent.

* The series is directed by Hungarian born Peter Ladkani. It is written by Anna Tebbe and executive produced by Zeljko Karajica, Klaus Zimmermann and Daniel March.

* Filming locations include a variety of areas, from Camps Bay to Hout Bay and many other parts of the city.

* Additional international cast includes Axel Milberg (Germany), Marcin Dorocinski (Poland), and Isolda Dychauk (Russia). All in all, this makes for a very global cast and crew, which should in turn make for a very interesting series.

* The South African cast includes Arnold Vosloo, Colin Moss, David Butler, Johnny Pienaar, Bart Fouche, Andre Jacobs, Alex McGregor, Danny Keogh, A.J. van der Merwe, Deon Lotz, Treasure Tshabalala, Susan Danford, Kim Syster, Michelle Scott, Marion Holm, Brendon Daniels, Crystal Donna Roberts, and Graham Clarke.

All in all, the series looks like it should be worth watching. Be sure to tune in to DStv on 7 September to check it out. To give you a bit of a sneak peek, here is the series trailer…

Looks pretty cool! And, now that I think about it, it’s probably a good time to read the books, too. What do you guys think… will you be watching the Cape Town series this month?
