V&A Waterfront – what to do, where to stay?

You might wonder what a working dock could possibly offer the visitors to Cape Town in terms of accommodation, but you would be very pleasantly surprised at the wealth of variety, luxury and peacefulness available.

Set amongst the historic buildings of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, with the tug boats frequently pulling cruise liners into the quayside of the Alfred basin and huge container ships berthing in the Duncan Dock, you would be forgiven for thinking that it couldn’t possibly offer sophisticated accommodation to the discerning guest.

The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront was given its name by virtue of the second son of Queen Victoria who began construction of the harbour in 1860. As you can see, the Waterfront carries both his and his mother’s name.

In 1988 a project was started to create the modern facilities you see today which encompasses shops, restaurants, cafes and entertainment amenities to rival any around the world.

Included within the rebuilding plans was the idea to incorporate a number of luxury Cape Town accommodation such as apartments and hotels offering holiday accommodation and all year round living space.

The up market modern Waterfront has transformed into South Africa’s top tourist destination, attracting over 20 million visitors each year.

So, what makes this the top South African attraction?

Cape Town Waterfront Accommodation

Victoria & Albert Waterfront, Cape Town

Perhaps it is the combination of old and modern, sophisticated yet simple, something for everyone appeal of water and boats, food, drink and stunning backdrops.

Take one of the gorgeous waterfront apartments.  Feeling almost as if you are king of all you survey, you are able to look down on the hustle and bustle of life below you from your wide balcony.  Your eye roams over the far-reaching views of Table Mountain, away across Table Bay to the vineyards of the Durbanville Hills.

Behind you, the light and glass of the apartment reflect the shimmering warmth of the sun and the glitter of the water making it feel like your very own yacht gently moving with the sway of the sea.  Free to come and go as you please, the restaurants of the Waterfront offer a smorgasbord of choice for your meals.

With a few minutes walk to your front row table, you are entertained by the street life – the mime artist copying the crowds walking habits, making everyone giggle with the likeness, the jazz band notes floating in the warm evening sunshine bring joyfulness and colour.

It has an irresistible pull that has you returning time and time again.  You never tire of watching the comings and goings – of boats, people or seals!  Yes, even the seals love to lounge around on the huge tyres that hang alongside the harbour walls topping up their suntans and catching up on sleep.
