There is a question I am often asked while guiding visitors through South Africa:
“What makes this place so special?”
At first, the obvious answers come to mind.
The extraordinary natural beauty. The mountains and oceans. The open landscapes, ancient forests and incredible wildlife. The warmth of the people. The diversity of our cultures and the richness of our history.
But the longer we talk, the more I realise that there is something else people feel here—something that is more difficult to put into words.
There is a gentleness to Africa.
Life does not always feel quite so hurried. There is time to breathe, to look around and to notice one another. People make eye contact. We smile and greet each other warmly. Conversations are not always rushed, and connection does not need to be scheduled into a diary.
Perhaps this is what visitors are sensing when they tell me that South Africa feels different.
When Did Life Become So Busy?
Modern life asks a great deal of us.
We work, plan, organise, answer messages and move from one responsibility to the next. Even when we are resting, our minds are often still busy.
We may be constantly connected through technology, yet feel increasingly disconnected from ourselves and from the people around us.
Many of us have become very good at being productive, but have forgotten what it feels like simply to be present.
We rarely stop to ask:
How am I really feeling?
What do I need?
When did I last feel completely alive?
When did I last sit quietly, without needing to be anywhere else?
This is why I believe travel can be so much more than seeing beautiful places. At its best, travel gives us enough distance from our normal routines to hear ourselves again.
A Return, Rather Than an Escape
I did not create the 8-Day Return to You – Safari, Garden Route and Cape Town Tour as an escape from real life.
I created it as an invitation to return to it differently.
The journey begins in the wild landscapes of the Eastern Cape, where mornings may start with yoga and the sounds of the African bush. It continues through the forests and dramatic coastline of the Garden Route, into the peaceful Overberg and onwards to Cape Town.
There will be wildlife, beautiful scenery, nourishing food and memorable experiences. But there will also be breathing room.
Time to walk.
Time to be quiet.
Time to sit around a fire and talk.
Time to laugh with people who may have been strangers only a few days before.
Time to reconnect with nature, with one another and, perhaps most importantly, with ourselves.
Wellness on this journey is not about trying to become a better or more impressive version of yourself. There is nothing to prove and no pressure to perform.
It is about remembering who you were before life became quite so noisy.
Africa and Our Shared Beginning
There is another reason Africa feels like the right place for this journey.
Africa is the birthplace of humankind. The earliest chapters of our shared human story began on this continent.
Long before countries, borders and all the labels we now use to separate ourselves, our human story began here.
In that sense, we are all connected to Africa.
Perhaps returning to this continent can awaken something ancient within us: a sense of belonging, a recognition that we are part of nature rather than separate from it, and a reminder that beneath our many differences, we share the same human origins.
When we stand quietly beneath an African sky, watch elephants moving together across the landscape or walk through a forest that has existed for centuries, our everyday concerns can begin to feel a little smaller.
We remember that we belong to something much larger.
Connection Begins With Presence
To connect meaningfully with other people, we must first learn to be present.
That can be difficult when we are tired, distracted and constantly moving. Genuine connection requires us to slow down long enough to see the person in front of us.
It begins with simple things: eye contact, a warm greeting, listening without preparing our next response and allowing a conversation to unfold naturally.
These small human moments are still very much alive in Africa.
This journey creates space for them. Guests will share meals, experiences, stories, laughter and quiet moments. Nobody will be expected to reveal more than they wish to or to become someone they are not.
The intention is simply to create the conditions in which real connection can happen naturally.
What I Hope Guests Will Take Home
Of course, I hope guests return home with wonderful photographs and memories of safari, forests, mountains, whales, penguins and the Cape coastline.
But I hope they take home something less visible too.
Perhaps a little more calm.
A renewed appreciation for nature.
The courage to slow down.
A deeper connection with themselves.
A reminder to make eye contact, to greet warmly and to give the people they love their full attention.
Most of all, I hope they remember that wellness is not always something we need to find, achieve or purchase.
Sometimes it is simply something we need to remember.
Sometimes we need to travel a long way—not to become somebody new, but to return to who we have always been.
The 8-Day Return to You – Safari, Garden Route and Cape Town Tour takes place from 20 to 27 November 2026.
