Distance – 1 and 1/2 hours: About an hour and one half from Cape Town stands McGregor, one of the popular weekend retreat areas of South Africa. Now a popular artist haven, the area is filled with quaint restaurants, art galleries, guest houses and wine cottages.

The 19th century architectural backdrop is perfect for walking, hiking, fishing on the banks, and even bird watching. Wine tasting is also available at the wine estates close by.

Distance – 1 and 1/2 hours: About the same distance from Cape Town is Ceres, named for the Roman goddess of fertility. This area is an important area for growing fruits.

The town can be accessed through one of the three scenic mountain passes, offering an abundance of outdoor activities, including freshwater fishing, 4x4ing, or spend an afternoon picking the plentiful cherrries when in season.

Stay the night at one of the quaint and cozy Bread & Breakfasts, or a self-catered farm cottage. Either way you’ll delight in the spectacular scenes and breathtaking backdrops of the area.

Distance – 1 and 1/2 hours: About 80 minutes from Cape Town is Tulbagh, a picturesque village with 32 historic buildings along its main street. This is the highest number of historic buildings in the country.

Many local artists consider this area home, and also enjoy the wide variety of wines along the route. Olive tasting is also available, as well as spectacular mountain views, and plenty of outdoor activities, including horse riding.

Distance – 1 and 1/2 hours: Worcester can be found approximately 80 minutes from Cape Town. as the commercial hub of the region it is also one of the large wine producing areas, and home to the KWV Brandy Cellar. This is the largest brandy cellar of its kind in the world.

Also in the area: the Karoo National Botanical Garden, Africa’s only true succulent garden, Kleinplasie Open Air Museum, where you can get a glimpse of bread and candle making in the old traditions. You will also find art galleries, museums and Cape Dutch architecture. Water sports and fishing are on the list for outdoor activities to explore.

Distance: 2 hours: About two hours from Cape Town is the Montagu Valley, known for its spectacular hot mineral springs. Surrounded by gorgeous mountains the area provides much for the outdoor enthusiasts.
